VICTOR RICE - VICTOR RICE IN AMERICA
cd review by vinnie in milwaukee

From Tastes like Chicken (http://www.tlchicken.com/view_story.php?ARTid=1955.com)

San Paulo, Brasil - March 20, 2003

YO!

For those who haven`t been checking, Dub Side of the Moon (Easy Star Records)
is getting massive exposure and great reviews all around.

Reports of it`s 'Oz-compatability' continue to come in.

A piece about the record ran on National Public Radio's All Things Considered on 3/12:

http://www.npr.org/programs/asc/archives/asc32/index.html#easystar

Well known music journalist Chris Nickson spoke about it and played the song "breathe" in its entirety!

In other news, I have just finished mixing the new Glenn Brown record(Antifaz Records) here in Sao Paulo, and it should be available later this year...

Be well, everyone!

Victor

Hello Everyone! Digging the snow in NYC?

Once again, the many-faceted email. 3 more shows this week, then I'm

Blessings and Protection for all, excluding not one!

1. Last Saturday Night
2. Amayo's Fu-Arkestra Plays Wednesday Night in Brooklyn
3. Dub Is a Weapon Plays Uptown This Saturday Night with Antibalas

2. Last Saturday Night in Bayshore, LI was incredible. Royal Roost,
the latest model of instrumental ska, jazz and soul put down a beat that
belied their years on this planet. Fronted by Buford O'sullivan, the
goods were delivered: New York still has the best horn players in the
world. The VR Octet got to play two intense sets for a crowd that just
wouldn't stop drinking or dancing- just sinful. Big up for Scofflaws
alumni Bill Grillo, Glen Saunders and Russ Sisto for making the event.

3. The Fu Arkestra, led by Antibalas frontman Amayo, is definitely the
band to see when you can't get enough afrobeat- apparently that
includes many members of Antibalas! I'll be playing bass for them that night.

Wed, Feb 19 at the
Five Spot Supper Club 459 Myrtle Ave. (at Washington Avenue), Clinton
Hill, Brooklyn (718) 852-0202 MAP $5!!!

NYC, USA - September 5, 2002

Wednesday, Aug 21 saw me safely arrived in NYC from Sao Paulo. The following day I was in Austin,TX to work with The Stingers, a very talented outfit that has been around (in some incarnation) for years. I first worked with them in 1998 at Version City. Vocalists Walter and Miguel had sent me their demo in advance and I rerecorded their rhythms with Vic Ruggiero, Eddie Ocampo and Agent Jay. Why wouldn't I? When they arrived to sing on the tracks, they were VERY pleasantly surprised. While in the studio, they also sang backup for Caz (Checkered Cabs) on our version of "There's a Light", from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. That's right- no one has heard that one yet. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised when asked to record and mix their first CD for Grover Records. The band has come a long way in 4 years- new songs, new members and a strong focus of style. This is Austin Rocksteady: three-part harmonies combined with faithful execution of the Jamaican rhythms. Add to the mix one Jonny "The Face" Meyers from Forest Hills, NYC with major songwriting ability. For the last couple of years I have mainly been mixing, so it was refreshing to return to setting up mics and being involved in the process from the beginning. Eight days and nights later, we emerged from Music Lane Studios (Studio info coming soon) with 14 fresh hot biscuits for this song-starved planet. Look for "This Good Thing" by the Stingers on Grover Records this fall... www.thestingers.net

San Paulo - July 19, 2002

Renowned WWW.DCSKA.COM has just posted a recent interview with me. it´s
been awhile since I´ve been interviewed, and it was a lot of fun.

I do feel the need to comment on my comments about Byron Lee and the
Dragonaires. I don´t wish to give a negative impression about them- I enjoy their music immensely- I just felt that my theory had to be disclosed about the way ska has been percieved or mispercieved, from the beginning...

My thoughts about former NYC mayor Rudolph Guiliani, however, stand.

Enjoy! www.dcska.com

San Paulo - June 19, 2002

I'm in Sao Paulo BR now, and (barring any trips into the northeast) i will be here until aug 21- when i fly back to NYC. now that i have a place to live here, things are settling down.

The Agnostic Front tour went well, of course. 3 shows in BR, Sao Paulo, Catanduva and Rio de Janeiro.not their first time down here(they hit Argentina and Chile as well), so it wasn't a surprise to see packed venues.

The new single for Court Jester's Crew(DE)"We Let the Good Times Roll(www.grover.de)" was mixed here in Pinheiros, SP at a studio called Rocha. I've also completed 3 more of my own tracks, bringing the count up to 8. with 5 more tracks waiting for me in Brooklyn, the count is getting dangerously close to "enough songs for another CD" status...

i'll be going into the studio with the Stingers from Austin, TX, to work with them on a new CD for Grover. scheduled for release at the end of the year....

Redbud Records (www.redbud.com) has released a 7" single by 33Hz, "Rude Meat" mixed by myself and backed with "Isso", another dub shot out of the Strikkly Vikkly kitchen. apparently the single has found it's place in the UK, selling over 400 copies. you can get yours at Jammyland NYC 3rd st between 1st and 2nd ave, east village, manhattan...

New York - 02/14/2002

A long overdue appointment with the Doctor

Last october, I had the pleasure of flying to Koln, Germany to make a dub record for Dr Ring-Ding and the Senior Allstars. Ever since making tracks with Richie Senior years ago at Version City(check out Rocker-T's 'Fiya Burn Rome'), I have wanted to collaborate with this crew. almost the entire "Big Up" record, released on Grover Records (www.grover.de) earlier last year, was dubbed live-to-tape in 3 lengthy sessions. The results are surprisingly mellow, considering how much activity went into these mixes. the record is called 'Pick up the pieces'. All judgement aside, I haven't been this happy about a record in a while. I find myself listening to it a lot, which i usually don't do. i was really psyched about the tracks I had to work with the Senior Allstars made it possible, and so did studio owner/engineer/musician Ekki Maas of (his studio and link to studio page)

It has been voted 'Record of the Month' at www.rootz.net
check it out- brush up on yer German...
